Insurance Inspections

In Alberta, you may require an Insurance Inspection to insure your car.

When is an Insurance Inspection required?

-If your vehicle is 12 years old or older, you will likely need to provide a passing vehicle inspection report form within 14 days of getting insurance.

-If your vehicle was last registered outside of Alberta, you will need to undergo an Out Of Province Vehicle Inspection to register it in Alberta, regardless of its age. Insurance companies will often accept this in place of an Insurance Inspection

-Some insurance companies have varying guidelines they follow. You will be required to undergo an Insurance Inspection if your provider requests it.

What to expect

Whether it is your first time needing an Insurance Inspection or you just want a quick refresher, we have compiled some points of what can be expected.

INSPECTION FORM

We have the required form on hand to perform your Insurance Inspection. You will be provided the necessary paperwork to provide to your Insurance provider.

VEHICLE PREP

It is imperative that your vehicle is brought to us inspection ready. What do we mean by this?

-All areas of the vehicle are accessible. Excess cargo or debris may result in the inability to properly perform the inspection and the inconvenience of having to make a new appointment.

-Children's car seats should be removed from the vehicle prior to inspection. All seat belts must be tested and in working order. Car seats often block access to a seat belt. In this situation, the car seat will be removed but not re-installed.

-Wheel lock keys should be placed on passenger seat or in the cup holder for quick access. Insurance Inspections require removal of your vehicles wheels. If the wheel lock key is not in the vehicle or the location of the wheel lock key is unknown, appointments may have to be re-booked or a forced removal of wheel locks performed. Should you choose forced removal it is important to note that the wheel locks will be destroyed in the process requiring replacement and additional charges will apply.

PLAN AHEAD

It is always best to plan ahead and not wait until last minute to have your Insurance Inspection performed. It is best to book as soon as your insurance provider has requested the Insurance Inspection. Often times they will allow 14 days before removing coverage. By booking immediately you allow time for any repairs that may be required.

SCHEDULING

The Insurance Inspection takes approximately 1-1.5 hours for full completion of the physical inspection and Insurance paperwork. We highly recommend planning to drop off your vehicle and going about your day. Early morning appointments are also recommended. Often if a repair is required, this allows for time to have it performed and prevent the need for additional visits.
